Arthur Dove was one of the foremost pioneers of modernism and abstraction in American painting, providing a pivotal influence on the rest of the artists in the circle of Alfred Stieglitz. While his early works are tremendously successful, he continued to make inroads into the vanguard of painting, reaching major breakthroughs again in the 1930s. He used a wide range of media to create the abstract landscapes that he is known for.
