The Russian-born artist emigrated to the United States in 1928, before establishing herself as a major practitioner of abstract art. She studied at the National Academy of Design in the 1930s; there she met Ilya Bolotowsky, whom she would marry (and divorce) in the same decade. While she worked extensively in a aesthetic inspired in part by Kazimir Malevich, she also made a series of classic children’s books in the following decades. HerĀ flattened, soft-colored forms appeal both in the world of Stuart Davis-like abstraction and in the idiom of illustration.
