Sometimes associated with Precisionism, George Ault is crafted evocative images of small towns, farms, and sometimes eerily unpopulated urban views.   Adopting the sharp edges of an home-grown cubism, Ault suggested in his deserted nightscapes an emotional complexity absent in the work of his modernist peers.  Not unlike Edward Hopper, he often painted a sense of desolation, owning the nighttime as much as Hopper owned the late afternoon.  He also experimented more explicitly with surreal arrangements and fantastical themes, but his paintings around his home near Woodstock would be his more lasting contribution.
