George Bellows, a pupil and associate of Robert Henri, helped define the Ashcan School, painting the grit of urban life at the beginning of the 20th century. He expressed himself with a strength and vitality of the boxers he famously depicted. His rich color and heavy application of paint demonstrate this vitality even in his pastoral landscapes.
