Mark di Suvero is among the world’s greatest living sculptors.  His signature style of monumental steel abstraction is renowned for advancing American sculpture into the second half of the 20th century.  Born in Shanghai to Italian expatriate parents, di Suvero naturalized in 1941 when his family immigrated to the United States, settling in San Francisco.  Educated in philosophy, di Suvero as young man turned his attention toward sculpture, moving to New York where Abstract Expressionism was the dominant idiom.  His work was quickly recognized for its clever use of found and forged objects, industrial materials, bold colors and muscular forms, deploying the sensitivity of Calder and the open central spaces of David Smith.  His work is in many private and public collections, and major outdoor pieces sit as jewels of Storm King Art Center and many other public spaces.  He has been a major force in the promotion of outdoor sculpture, helping to found the Socrates Sculpture Garden, in addition to remaining highly sought after for major public commissions worldwide.
