Born in Germany, Kelpe was an American painter who worked in a heavily abstracted style. His sharp-edged planes of color recall Gerald Murphy and anticipate Pop. He became a muralist for the Federal Art Project, contributing major works in Williamsburgh, Brooklyn (now in the Brooklyn Museum). Kelpe was a founding member of the American Abstract Artists group, and his work played a pivotal role in the development of the abstract idiom in America.
